The Pace Patriots moved into the 4A final eight Friday night with a convincing 27-3 win over the Milton Panthers (9-3) at Patriot Field. The undefeated Patriots (12-0), ended Milton’s season on a chilly night in front of one of the largest crowds ever at Pace, and did it in convincing style. The Patriots jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on a 6-yard quarterback keeper by Aaron Munoz and a field goal by Eric Martinez.

They made it 17-0 in the second, when defensive back Kolby Boesen picked off a Milton pass and raced 75 yards to paydirt. The play seemed to take the wind out of the Panther’s sails, although they did manage to get a field goal before intermission to head into the locker room trailing 17-3. The Halftime break seemed to help, as both teams’ defensive units held other scoreless in the third, but Pace put the game away in the fourth on a 2-yard run and a field goal. The Patriots will move to Jacksonville next Friday for the regional finals, and face a tough match-up with Jacksonville First Coast (11-1), a 42-15 upset winner over Tallahassee Lincoln (10-2). The winner of that game will meet the winner of the Nease Ponte Vedra Beach (11-1) and Daytona Beach Seabreeze (12-0), in the State semi-finals Dec. 7. Nease shut down Lake City Columbia 21-0 Friday, while unbeaten Seabreeze beat Rockledge, 27-10. Looking down the road, the competition looks pretty good. The other 4A bracket will have Tampa Plant (11-1) taking on 12-0 Seffner Armwood, while Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer (10-2) goes up against 12-0 Miami Washington. Armwood beat Tampa Hillsborough 35-0 Friday, while Washington beat Hallendale 41-0. Pace coach Mickey Lindsey is taking it one game at a time, and Friday’s win over Milton was as big as any win. When it comes down to Pace and Milton, it’s as good as a state title game for both sides. |
